Neurodivergence
Beyond the Label: A Framework for Self-Discovery
Neurodiversity describes the natural variations in how our brains process information and sensory stimuli. I firmly believe that exploring these differences offers a powerful framework for making sense of your life, rather than a reductive label that pathologizes who you are. It opens the door to a process of self discovery that enables you to live a more authentic and compassionate life.
Surviving in a Neurotypical world
Neurodivergent people experience huge challenges to their sense of themselves when the societal reference point is neurotypical people. They often feel defined by what they cannot do, which can lead to:
The Cost of Masking: Investing enormous effort into behaving in ways that don't feel natural, effectively living "out of yourself" to meet others' expectations.
Impact on Identity: Feeling a disconnect between your authentic self and the version of you that the world sees.
The Weight of Stigma: Navigating modern challenges, such as dismissive attitudes that portray neurodivergence as a trend or bandwagon ("everyone has ADHD these days,") which can feel threatening to your lived reality.
Support for Every Stage of Your Journey
I support neurodivergent clients (primarily those with ADHD and Autism) regardless of where they are in their process of identification:
Early Wondering: Exploring whether lifelong difficulties might be explained by neurological differences rather than "incompetence".
Awaiting Assessment: Navigating the anxiety of the diagnostic process and questioning its validity.
Self-Identification: Exploring how to incorporate this new knowledge into your identity and finding ways to support yourself.
Post-Diagnosis: Making sense of what a formal diagnosis means for your history and your future choices.
How We Work Together
My goal is to help you fully embrace the unique nature of your neurodivergence, acknowledging both its strengths and its limits.
Building authenticity: We work to help you live a more authentic and compassionate life.
Conscious choices: We explore how to balance your own needs and preferences against the demands of a neurotypical world.
Personal & professional impact: We look at how your neurodivergence manifests in your relationships, your work, and your personal life.
Empathy and Lived Experience
In our sessions, I draw on my clinical work, ongoing research, and my own personal exploration into my suspected neurodivergence. I offer a space that is affirming, validating, and deeply supportive.
