My Approach & Practice
My approach to therapy
"I believe therapy is a collaborative process where my role is to facilitate understanding and empower you to make new choices"
My approach is integrative, meaning I draw on different traditions—including Transactional Analysis (TA), humanistic traditions, attachment theory and psychodynamic ideas—as a way of understanding how our early experiences and relationships can shape how we view ourselves, others and the world around us.
I incorporate third wave therapies such as mindfulness as well as a neuroscientific understanding of the nervous system to help clients tolerate and regulate painful emotions.
The process: Thinking together
Mapping the Present
We begin by looking at the relationships or situations causing you difficulty. We’ll identify how specific thoughts or beliefs trigger feelings that lead to behaviours that might no longer serve you.
Understanding Origins
We gently explore earlier experiences to see if we can identify where these patterns began. Sometimes these experiences simply need processing; at other times, they require us to challenge long-held beliefs about ourselves.
Trying New Ways of Relating
Therapy is a collaborative process. We will think together about how to reframe unhelpful beliefs and—crucially—try out new, more authentic ways of behaving and relating to yourself and others. Therapy is also supportive so we will do this at a pace and depth that is tolerable, taking time to reflect on what these new experiences have shown you.
Working Relationally
The relationship between us is a powerful vehicle for change. It provides a “live” context for understanding how you relate to others and a framework for developing healthier relationships. I believe we are both hurt and healed in relationships.
